In Progress
(mag·pie)
Magpie is a body of hand-constructed textile works that investigates the knot as a chain structure.
In this work, Julia explores the idea of a magpie knot (commonly known as seesaw knot) – a form that does not resolve, but contains. Threads cross, return, alternate from side to side. As the magpie collects treasures, Julia collects tensions, forms, and shadows. A piece emerges not from a single idea, but from accumulation – of labor, adjustment, and attention.
Magpie is made of cotton rope which is humble and tactile, yet capable of sculptural presence. It absorbs light, cast shadows, and shifts with the viewer's position. The work is not fixed; it flows, revealing itself gradually.
"Magpie becomes a quiet structure in which complexity is allowed to remain intact."
